She managed the Open Society Foundations\u2019 work to define open access to research through the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Budapest Open Access Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BOAI) and went on to support the development of the global open access movement. To mark the 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anniversary of the BOAI, she spearheaded the development of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org\/boai20\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which emphasize that open access is not an end in itself, but a means to further ends, above all, to the equity, quality, sustainability, and usability of research. Currently she is the Director of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org\/about\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BOAI Org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which advocates for the equitable development of open access globally. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa co-organized the meeting that led to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capetowndeclaration.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cape Town Open Education Declaration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which offered strategies for the growth of the global open education movement.
