{"id":66592,"date":"2023-02-23T05:48:22","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T13:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/?p=66592"},"modified":"2023-09-27T17:29:25","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T17:29:25","slug":"cc-needs-assessment-report-on-public-domain-tools-in-cultural-heritage-sector-unveils-key-insights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/2023\/02\/23\/cc-needs-assessment-report-on-public-domain-tools-in-cultural-heritage-sector-unveils-key-insights\/","title":{"rendered":"CC Needs Assessment Report on Public Domain Tools in Cultural Heritage Sector Unveils Key Insights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today Creative Commons is proud to release our report on the Needs Assessment entitled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Creative-Commons-Public-Domain-Tools-Needs-Assessment-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Are the Creative Commons Public Domain Tools Fit-For-Purpose in the Cultural Heritage Sector?<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1 January (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/2021\/12\/09\/public-domain-2022-join-us-20-january-for-a-celebration-of-sound\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Domain Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to 15 February 2022, we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/2022\/01\/17\/assessing-cultural-heritage-institutions-needs-related-to-ccs-public-domain-tools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ran a multilingual online survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using Google Forms to share a 50-question questionnaire in English, French and Spanish. We received responses from 133 field practitioners \u2014 working in libraries, museums and archives and other areas of open culture \u2014 from 44 different countries on five continents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This report showcases one of the many ways in which we at CC strive to support our global Open Culture community in realizing a vision for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better sharing <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of cultural heritage: we develop and steward a legal, social, and technical infrastructure that supports open sharing that is impactful, generative, equitable and resilient. The insights gained from this report are crucial in guiding our efforts to improve the accessibility and usability of our public domain tools for the cultural heritage community. At CC, we are committed to improving our response to the needs of our global community and supporting better sharing, and the maintenance of our licenses and tools, focused on the communities they serve, takes center stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this report, we gain valuable insight into the unique needs and challenges of the cultural heritage community with regard to our public domain tools: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/publicdomain\/mark\/1.0\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public domain mark (PDM)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/publicdomain\/zero\/1.0\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public domain dedication tool (CC0)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key findings include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The top reason to release content openly is to \u201cincrease the institution&#8217;s presence, visibility, reach and relevance online.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While about a little less than a third share a small part of the collection with CC0 or PDM, only about 4% share their entire collection with either tool.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CC website is by far the number one source of information on CC public domain tools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About one third do not know which of CC0 or PDM is better to use to release digital reproductions of items in collections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">72% see how CC public domain tools can make a difference in how the institution shares its collection.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also define pathways to address those needs, with strategic recommendations to guide future actions in four steps: <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 1: Get to know and understand our global community better<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 2: Raise awareness, offer guidance and build capacity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 3: Explore legal and technical improvements to the tools<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 4: Probe unmet needs\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the recommendations outlined in this report, we are well-positioned to address the unique needs and challenges of the cultural heritage community, and to further our mission of promoting better sharing and equitable access to cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Creative-Commons-Public-Domain-Tools-Needs-Assessment-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66313 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Read-the-full-document-\u2192.png\" alt=\"Button that says &quot;Read the full document \u2192&quot;\" width=\"440\" height=\"70\" srcset=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Read-the-full-document-\u2192.png 440w, https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Read-the-full-document-\u2192-300x48.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you also want to get involved?
